Research Questions and Avatar Creation

The students and Ms. Deck started their 'Identity and Location' research for the project today.  Everyone is very excited to welcome Tracy to the school and to start working with her on the project.  Ms. Deck is laying down some foundational information before she gets here, so that the students can get right to work with her.  YAY!

To begin, students were given two 'artist's research questions' on two separate pieces of paper.  The questions asked:

Page 1.  What do we know about (y)our IDENTITY (past, present, future)?

Page 2.  What do we know about (y)our LOCATION (past, present, future)?

I asked the students to keep those pieces of paper with them during the school day.

As they go about their activities, and they encounter information linked to either IDENTITY or LOCATION, they are to record it on the sheet as part our our collective brainstorming.  We will be sharing our individual research in the coming classes.

Students were then then shown our project blog and asked to bookmark this URL to their 'Favorites.'  Each student was invited to become a blog "Follower."

Next, Ms. Deck showed the students a variety of ways to make avatars.  The avatars, Ms. Deck explained, could be used to represent their IDENTITY and LOCATION on the web.

Hilarity ensued!  Here's Ms. Deck's South Park Avatar (above).

If you know of a good website for creating an avatar, please email Ms. Deck or write to this blog!
